One of the most common questions homeschoolers ask is: Which homeschool grammar curriculum should I choose? With so many options—ranging from traditional workbooks to story-based programs and online tools—it can be tough to know what will best suit your student. As a homeschooler for over 20 years with my three kids, I have seen and used a lot of homeschool curriculum. This series of posts begins with grammar, but won’t end there. I plan to share about all of the subjects and all of the homeschool curriculum we have used over the years.
Below I’ll compare some of the most popular homeschool grammar programs, highlighting their approach, target ages, things to consider, and purchase options. Some of the links below are affiliate links.
First, you’ll see the grammar programs we used in our homeschool, and then other grammar curricula available.

Fix It! GRAMMAR
We used Fix It! Grammar for years with my younger two children. It is a family favorite that we used all the way through high school. See a full review I wrote here!
- Grades: Grades 4th–12th (levels vary)
- Approach: Editing-based. Students correct and mark up errors in a continuing story.
- Best for: Families who want a light, practical, story-based approach that reinforces editing skills.
- Purchase Options: IEW, Christian Book, Amazon
GROWING WITH GRAMMAR
We used all levels of GWG with my oldest kids. This is my favorite traditional grammar program. It is very straightforward and worksheet-based.
- Grades: 1st–8th
- Approach: Traditional workbook style, incremental lessons with exercises.
- Best for: Students who do well with clear, traditional grammar exercises.
- Purchase Options: JacKris Publishing

FIRST LANGUAGE LESSONS
We used FLL levels 1 & 2 alongside of Growing with Grammar for two totally different approaches in the early years. FLL is oral and we loved the poems, I even created PowePoint shows to go along with the poems.
- Grades: 1st–4th (Books 1–4)
- Approach: Classical, scripted, teacher-led lessons with memorization and copywork.
- Best for: Parents wanting a solid, classical start with strong teacher involvement.
- Purchase Options: Well Trained Mind, Christian Book, Amazon
GRAMMAR GALAXY
We used this for one year and loved it. It was a fun change in the middle of the others we used. Had I found this first, I might have used it longer.
- Grades: 1st–6th +
- Approach: Story-based, with missions to complete.
- Best for: Creative or reluctant learners who love stories and need a gentle introduction.
- Purchase Options: Fun to Learn, Christian Book, Amazon
