We are still a bit slower with You Can Read due to our relaxed summer homeschool routine! We spread this unit out over a couple of weeks. Along with adding these new words, we also reviewed the previous 8 words from unit one and unit two.
Here’s a post sharing You Can Read Unit Three with Krash when he did it! See all of Krash’s Kindergarten posts here.
Unit Organization
You can see how we store ALL of our You Can Read stuff here. For current units I use this metal file container {Target} and hanging folders. The pink ones are You Can Read units, the yellow are her Kindergarten Literature Unit Study Printables {which we are not using during the summer but will pick back up again in August}. I have a daily lesson plan for both in a sheet protector in the front. The You Can Read printable lesson plan is here.
I have been asked a lot how we do things so I am trying to outline it for you as much as possible! I am not sure if I will blog all the way through You Can Read like this, but if it is helpful, I might, let me know! Below you will see exactly what we did on each day and how I spread it out.
Day One
Here’s a before shot showing what we did together on the first day with unit three. We focused a LOT on the sight word caterpillar and instead of hanging him on a wall we are using our pocket chart so we can take the circles down and use them during the lessons.
After I taught her her the words, she built them…
She figured out she could stand them up using the edge of the shelf.
Using her circles to read and find words in her easy reader.
Then a very creative color by number sight word! This one has cats and dogs on each letter.
Day Two
Here is the before shot for day 2.
She chose to work on her color by number sight word first.
She had lots of fun tracing in the dry erase center!
She drew dots on the letters instead of circling the words in the word search.
Word puzzles…
Day Three
Our third day of lessons with these words…
She chose stamping words first!
We played BINGO, with Spielgaben pieces.
Dot Painting her funny font words…
She then used her dot paint for her color by number sight word!
Her easy reader…
Day Four
Day 4 with these words.
We had an AWESOME time playing throw and read with our Education Cubes inserts!
Here’s a video clip I shared on Instagram…
She loves play dough words…
Day Five
I set up a few activities for her and she chose what to do first.
Finding her words in sentences…
Dot painting her color by word…
Here’s a photo I shared on Instagram…
One of her favorite activities is playing memory with her color by number sight words combined with the words Krash made when he was in Kindergarten. Once we are done for the week, we laminate hers and add them with his and play! Here’s a photo from Instagram.
She learned these words quickly, I didn’t do all of the activities with her. It was time to move on! I adjust each week based on how quickly she masters the words. With You Can Read I don’t move on without mastery, or very close to it. If she doesn’t know them we just keep playing with them until she does, that’s why I provide TONS of activities to choose from to take the units as far as you might need to!
Here’s most of her completed work from the time we spent with these words…
