Learning to recognize letters is an important early literacy skill, and hands-on activities make practicing much more fun! This free uppercase and lowercase letter matching printable gives preschoolers and kindergarteners a simple way to explore the alphabet while building letter recognition skills.
What makes this printable special is the use of real photographs! Each letter features a colorful photo of a familiar object or animal, along with its uppercase and lowercase letters. Children match the two puzzle pieces together, making connections between the different forms of each letter.
Whether your child is just beginning to recognize letters or is ready to review the entire alphabet, this activity is easy to adjust to fit their learning level.

What’s Included in This Alphabet Matching Printable?
This free printable features matching puzzles for all 26 letters of the alphabet. Each puzzle includes:
- An uppercase letter with a large photograph in the background.
- A matching lowercase letter paired with a smaller photograph.
- Two puzzle pieces that fit together to create a complete letter match.
The photographs add another layer of learning. For example, children can connect A with apple, B with bear, and C with cat.
I love using real photos in early learning activities because they help children connect what they see on paper with familiar things in the world around them.
The simple puzzle format also provides a visual way for children to check their work as they match each pair.
How to Prepare Your Uppercase and Lowercase Letter Matching Activity
One of my favorite things about printable activities is that you can prepare them in different ways. Choose the option that works best for your homeschool or classroom!
Option 1: Print and Cut
For a quick activity, simply print the pages and cut out the matching pieces.
I recommend printing on cardstock for extra durability. However, regular printer paper will work if you’re planning to use the activity just a few times.
After cutting, mix up the pieces and let your child begin matching!
Option 2: Laminate for Repeated Use
If you plan to use these alphabet puzzles regularly, laminating is a great option.
- Print the alphabet matching pages on cardstock.
- Laminate the pages before cutting.
- Cut along the dashed lines and separate the puzzle pieces.
- Store the pieces in a small container, zippered pouch, or labeled bag.
Laminating helps the cards last longer, especially when little hands will be using them frequently.
Option 3: Create a File Folder Matching Activity
Another fun option is to turn these puzzles into a reusable file folder activity!

First, cut apart the puzzle pieces. Then attach the uppercase letter pieces inside a file folder. You can use glue or double-sided tape to secure them.
Next, laminate the lowercase pieces or cover them with clear contact paper. Add hook-and-loop dots to the puzzle pieces and matching spaces inside the folder.
Your child can then match each lowercase letter to its uppercase partner!
Helpful tip: You don’t need to fit the entire alphabet into one folder. Create smaller sets with just a few letters per folder. This makes the activity easier to manage and store.
File folder activities are especially useful for independent practice, quiet learning time, and preschool literacy centers.
Different Ways to Use These Alphabet Matching Puzzles
One of the best things about this printable is how easily you can adapt it for different learning stages.
Level 1: Just Beginning to Learn Letters
If your child is new to identifying uppercase and lowercase letters, start small!
Choose just 3 to 5 familiar letters instead of introducing the entire alphabet.
Letters from your child’s name are a wonderful place to begin. You can also choose letters that look similar in uppercase and lowercase form, such as C/c, O/o, and S/s.
Place the uppercase pieces on the table and offer the matching lowercase pieces one at a time. Say each letter name together as your child finds its match.
At this stage, the goal is simple recognition. There’s no need to rush into matching all 26 letters.
Level 2: Building Letter Recognition
Once your child recognizes several letters confidently, increase the challenge. Try offering 6 to 10 letter pairs at a time. Mix the lowercase pieces together and encourage your child to find each matching uppercase letter. As your child improves, gradually add more letters to the activity.
Level 3: Full Alphabet Review
Children who already know most of their letters can practice with the entire alphabet! Spread out all 26 uppercase pieces. Then place the lowercase pieces in a pile. Have your child find each matching pair and assemble the complete puzzles. For another challenge, encourage your child to arrange the completed puzzles in alphabetical order. This is also a great way to notice which letters your child recognizes quickly and which ones might need additional practice.
More Fun Ways to Practice Letter Matching
Once you’ve prepared your puzzles, try changing how you present them to keep the activity interesting.
- Alphabet Hunt: Hide a few lowercase pieces around the room. Have your child find them and match them to the uppercase letters.
- Memory Game: Place a small set of uppercase and lowercase cards face down. Take turns flipping two pieces to find matching letters.
- Sensory Bin Matching: Hide the lowercase pieces in a dry sensory bin. Have your child discover each letter and find its uppercase match.
Remember, you don’t have to introduce every activity at once. A few minutes of meaningful letter practice can be more valuable than a long session that leaves your child frustrated.
Favorite Alphabet Learning Supplies
Pairing hands-on alphabet activities with books and simple learning toys is a wonderful way to reinforce letter recognition throughout the day.
I especially love keeping alphabet books, magnetic letters, and other letter-themed materials nearby. Children can explore the same letters in several different ways, which helps make learning more natural.
