As the summer sun begins to set and the excitement of a new school year builds, it’s time to stock up on fun, engaging, and low-prep learning resources! Whether you are setting up your preschool or Kindergarten classroom literacy centers or preparing your homeschool morning baskets, getting little learners excited about letters is always a top priority.
To help you kick off the year on the right foot, I am thrilled to share this Free Pencil ABC Match Printable!
This cute, school-themed activity is a wonderful way for toddlers, preschoolers, and kindergarteners to practice letter recognition and phonics skills in a hands-on way.
Why You’ll Love This Alphabet Matching Activity
Early childhood educators and homeschooling parents know that worksheets can sometimes feel tedious for young minds. That’s why interactive matching games are so powerful!
This 3-piece pencil puzzle challenges children to connect three crucial foundational skills:
- Uppercase Letter Recognition: Featured on the pink eraser end.
- Lowercase Letter Recognition: Featured in the middle of the pencil.
- Beginning Letter Sounds: Featured on the sharp pencil tip, showcasing an object that starts with that letter (like A for apple, B for ball, and C for cow!).
Breaking the alphabet down into these three visual components helps solidify letter-sound correspondence and fine motor skills all at once.

- Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Print the puzzle pages on heavy cardstock.

- Cut along the dotted lines to separate each pencil into three distinct pieces.
- Scramble the pieces on a table or in a sensory bin, and let the matching fun begin!
Ways to Play and Learn
Depending on where your child or students are in their learning journey, you can easily adapt this activity to fit their needs:
- Modify for Two-Piece Matching: If your little learners aren’t quite ready to work on beginning sounds yet, simply don’t cut off the pencil tip! Cut out the uppercase eraser piece, but leave the lowercase middle section and the object tip attached as one larger piece. This allows kids to focus strictly on matching uppercase and lowercase letters without being overwhelmed by the phonics component.
- For Beginners: Start small! Give your child just 3 to 5 letters at a time (like A, B, and C). Let them master those before adding more pencils to the pile.
- Sensory Bin Search: Hide the pencil tips or lowercase middle pieces inside a sensory bin filled with black beans, dried corn, or yellow shredded paper. Have kids hunt for the missing pieces to complete their pencils.
- Alphabetical Order Race: Once all the pencils are put together, challenge your learner to line them up in order from A to Z!
