I am teaching young children again! Not my own children this time, but the children of a very good friend. See our original post about this new adventure here. Each week I plan to share our plans, which I did for week 2 {letter B} here, and I also plan to share after our week is done so you can see my students in action!
Looking for past weeks?
I am excited to share all about our second week together, with a focus on the LETTER B! In addition to a letter focus each week I am using All About Reading Pre-Reading with them. Since I only have my students two days a week, we cram a lot into a short time! I also provide their parents with activities to do at home.
All About Reading Lessons
This past week we enjoyed lessons 6-10 in AAR Pre-Reading. I am not doing the letter crafts from AAR in the order of the lessons, but am going to use those with our letter of the week focus. We are moving quickly through the activities that focus on other pre-reading skills and right now the emphasis is RHYMING! The kids loved all of the fun games and Ziggy the Zebra! We also completed the B craft page!
One of the rhyming activities they love is called “Get Out of the Wagon.” This activity is included in our lesson manual, which you can see above in the photo collage. The printable version of this activity is available for free here!
Letter B Fun
We enjoyed several different activities, most from my site! I will link everything we used below!

I didn’t get any action shots, but we enjoyed the verse bracelets, and tracing pages this week in addition to the items on the display board!

The kids enjoy playing with the toys and reading the books. Another hands-on activity I have them do is bring in objects from home that begin with the letter we are studying. You can see their collection in the top right photo below. In the top left, you can see them working on a beginning sound sort using our tiny objects. See more about this here!

More Kindergarten/PreK Fun
There’s more than just our letter of the week focus! See more of what we did below!
For math, I am using Interactive Kindergarten Math with them.
To keep this fun for them, we are using dry erase markers for the worksheets. I recently bought a new set for them and I LOVE them!
While I work with one child, the other has “rug time” which is basically reading books or playing with toys on the rug! This works well and allows me some one on one time with each of them. After we finish they enjoy some rug time together.
They work on their monthly calendar notebooks at home and also with me on the days they are at my house. Below you can see AK completing a journal entry!
Finally, we are using my Kindergarten Literature Units as the basis for our theme-based learning fun! The past two weeks we enjoyed a FARM theme with our The Big Red Barn K Literature Unit! I created some additional printables focused on their needs for this unit, you can see those here!
