I am teaching two young children who are using All About Reading Level 1 right now. We are working on reading CVC words and they practice at home a lot in addition to their time with me. I created these cards for them to use independently since they are self-correcting with a photo on the back!

All About Reading Level 1 moves quickly but it isn’t meant to do at a particular speed. The lessons introduce the sounds and words, but many kids need additional practice before moving on to the next lesson. I am creating resources for them to use and will be sharing them here also, so be sure to follow along! These cards are just the beginning!

For this set, I chose words that they are working on in their reading curriculum as well as additional short a words. There are tons of printables online featuring cute clipart so I chose to use photographs, which is always my preference if possible, The following CVC words are included in our short A set:

Preparation Instructions:

Print the whole page, cut apart on dotted edges around the image and the word. Fold in half on the solid gray line. Laminate after folding. If you aren’t laminating, use tape to seal the card shut.

This allows the child to practice reading the words and immediately self-correct by flipping the card over to see the image!

As my students learn specific sounds and words in the reading curriculum, I add to their stack of words to practice. We don’t practice all at once, the goal at a young age is to create a love of learning and a love of learning to read! Keeping review simple and short is key to not overwhelming a young child who is learning to read. Yes, they need lots of practice, but keeping the joy in learning is also an important part. The self-correcting aspect of these word cards provides confidence as the child can quickly self-correct.
