TEACHING HIGH FREQUENCY WORDS
Earlier this week I shared a fun and interactive activity, Sticky Note Word Hunt which is great for learning high frequency words. Building a sight word vocabulary is very important for all readers. Remember, high-frequency words and sight words are not the same thing, be sure to read more here if that’s news to you! We use You Can Read Sight Words {the new and improved version} to focus on teaching high frequency words and my Kindergarten students have learned 12 words so far. This activity was created to help them review in a fun and engaging way!
Roll, Find, Read, Squish WORD REVIEW GAME
First, I chose 8 words from our You Can Read Sight Words units for my students to review. They have learned 12 words so far, but I chose the 8 that they need the most work with. I entered these words into the editable PDF which automatically added them to the activity page:
I printed a copy for each student and put them in a dry erase pocket. The exact pockets we use are linked below.
My students rolled play dough into tiny balls, which is a great way to work on fine motor skills. Once they created enough playdough balls we began the activity!
How to play:
- Roll a die
- Find the number row
- Read the first {or next in line} word in that row
- Squish a tiny play dough ball on top of the word to mark it
We play together but you could give each student a die and have them play independently. Since my students are still mastering these words, it was a great way to provide gentle assistance as needed by playing together and the kids finding the same words.
Materials Needed:
- Editable PDF {link at bottom of post}
- dice
- play dough
- sheet protector or dry erase pocket
This game is a great way to review words your child has learned. Easy to prepare, simple to customize, effective review, and fun to play! The perfect combo for young students!
