We completed another Kindergarten Literature Unit, The Selfish Crocodile, during the past two weeks.
I love setting up a central area for our theme focus and my daughter loves it too. I gather our toys and books together and display them the night before we begin our unit. It helps to draw her in and get her excited about our learning time together. I usually borrow books from the library but didn’t have time to get there so we used the croc books we had.
The full set-up…
The set up didn’t include much {2 books, 2 crocs, coloring and the pocket chart}. I wanted something more fun and creative so I sat and though for awhile and then remembered I had little foam crocodiles in a old set, and some blue fish rocks = a RIVER! She also had a crocodile craft she made a few months ago, I put him in too. She LOVED this!
We used this unit over two weeks, spreading out the lessons over 5 days total. I follow a very loose lesson plan and shift things around as needed or desired. I do not stress out at all about what does or does not get done each day. We just have fun together and learn as we go!
I tried something new by taking small video clips for you throughout our unit. Let me know if these are helpful to you.
Day One
She immediately wanted to play with the “river” which was fun!
I don’t have action shots, but I had her come with me to hunt for animals we had around the house to represent all of the animals in the book! Many were up in her room, it was fun! Below you can see them all around her!
After she explored freely for a while, we read the book and added in the little animals we had to the story.
Working on the 3 part animal cards in our small pocket chart!.
Here’s a video of us in action!
She set all of the animals up at the end and played for a long time! I didn’t add in any other work this day, to allow for plenty of free exploration and fun!
Day Two
Again, she began with free exploration. The shelf makes it nice and inviting.
We dug into the ordinal number activity next! She liked this!

We enjoyed the character connection activity next.

Finally, she worked on the C is For… activity!
Day Three
After reading the book again, we put the story in order using our printables.
We did the small, medium large math activity…
She painted a crocodile {technically an alligator craft but who’s telling?}, which was a BIG hit! She loves these!
After it dried, we cut him out and put him together.
Day Four
She LOVED making a river scene and told me I need a story scene for every book.
Here’s a peek of her in action making her river scene…
Dot painting fraction circles. These printables are to give a basic introduction to fractions.
Rainbow crocodiles! She also cut them all out and gave them to each of us as gifts.
Tracing the word selfish in our Bible verse as we discussed it.
Day Five
She really enjoyed the greater than less than activity!
Here she is in action…
We cut up our comprehension questions and put them in a bag for her to make it ore fun. She really enjoys this. She keeps the ones she gets right!

To close out our fun with this unit, she made a crocodile using the Nature Guide that comes with our Spielgaben set!
