Playful Learning with Spielgaben is our monthly post sharing Spielgaben in action! If you missed the introduction to this series, you can see it here. We were given the Spielgaben set to review and are honored to have them as a blog sponsor.
Exploring Time on an Analog Clock
We have been using our Spielgaben set to explore time this month. Ladybug has been learning time in her Life of Fred math book so I naturally took out the Spielgaben math lessons about time to enrich her learning in a hands on way.
Math Manual, Part 2, Chapter 1 ~ Play 24: Analog Clock
Using the activity presented in the Spielgaben Math Manual {shown above} as a base for our learning, we first created our own clock to work with. She helped me with all of the steps.
We then reviewed how to tell time to the hour and the half hour. We went back and forth a lot, all while using our newly created clock.
She really liked her clock, it’s amazing how creating something simple together can really engage a child.
On another day, we extended our learning by using cut up sitcky notes to make little hidden doors to remind her of the rest of the multiples of 5 all around the clock. She worked with me again, cutting up the papers, sticking them on and writing the numbers all around the clock.
We then used this to learn more about telling time to the 5s – the little flaps were great for confidence boosting and by the end of one session with me she really grasped the count by 5s concepts and challenged herself to not peek in the flaps!
We have continued to use our clock for review and will build even more on this, using other lessons in the Spielgaben Math Manual!
Totally unrelated to telling time, but here’s another fun thing I caught her doing with our set this month, making awesome tops! She still builds and creates freely with our set a lot!
See more math fun we have had with Spielgaben!
