The homeschool curriculum choices blog posts are great, but what I really want to know is what families thought AFTER they used the curriculum they chose! I will be sharing a series of posts with you; evaluating our choices in each grade level from this homeschool year.

Math ~ Teaching Textbooks 6
Teaching Textbooks 6 was a great fit and he will be moving on to TT 7 in the fall. He normally scores between a 90-100 on the lessons an we step in to check on issues if he scores below that. He has worked independently this year for the most part, coming to us when something is confusing.
Reading
See all of the books he read this year here in this post!
Writing & Grammar – Writer’s in Residence
Some of you have been waiting on my thoughts about this and here they are! I love this curriculum but it wasn’t the right fit for him. Honestly the trouble came mostly from his gymnastics training schedule. This curriculum was pretty time consuming, which just didn’t fit for him. We worked through over half of the book and then decided to take a break. I loved what we did and I still recommend Writer’s in Residence. Some curriculums are great, just not a great fit for a particular child.
We have decided to switch all of our kids over to IEW since my oldest son had a good experience this past year {he was the only one I switched}. K will be using IEW Ancient History Based Writing Lessons.
I will also be adding Growing with Grammar back in for him. Honestly I should have had him do it for 5th grade, but my thoughts were that the grammar in Writer’s in Residence would be enough for him. It would have been, had we finished it!
Spelling ~ All About Spelling Level 5
All About Spelling continues to be a good fit for my kids and we will be moving on to level 3 in the fall!
Vocabulary ~ Spectrum Vocabulary Grade 5
Not his favorite but I like it. It’s good for him. I especially like the reading comprehension and vocabulary test practice pages in the back of the book. We did 3 vocab lessons per week and one test practice lesson. He will be doing the 6th grade book in the fall.
Geography ~ Evan-Moor Daily Geography Grade 5
I really like this book and it was a good fit for him. We completed every lesson and he was exposed to all sorts of things I would have never thought of!
Science ~ Apologia Swimming Creatures {with Ladybug, 2nd grade}
Daddy taught this to the younger kids together and they loved it! They technically aren’t done with the entire book but will be doing some lessons this summer to finish!
History ~ The Mystery of History 2
Daddy also teaches history and while it isn’t the favorite of the kids, we love it!
Drop out Subjects ~ Bible
I also had planned to do Picture Smart Bible with K and L together and didn’t follow through. It was much harder this year to combine L and K because of K’s gymnastics schedule.
Stay tuned, I will be sharing our year-end review for 9th soon. I will also be sharing our curriculum choices for 10th grade, 6th grade and 3rd grade.
