We had another excellent experience with You Can Read Sight Words this past homeschool year! I created this program for my son and used it with him a few years ago. I then used it this past year with my daughter and thankfully she loved it and had great success with it also!
You may have noticed we abruptly stopped posting about our You Can Read adventures after Unit 13. There are 18 total units, plus color and number words. Wondering why we stopped sharing? Read below to find out why!
Here’s a recap of the units she completed this year, click on the images to see each post.
As I was preparing for unit 14, she noticed what I was doing and came up next to me and read all of the words. I quickly realized we were at the stage where I needed to “pretest” her so I didn’t waste my time preparing a unit she didn’t even need.
Well, guess what? I showed her the rest of the words from units 15-18 and she knew all but a couple. I opted to just have her learn those words naturally and skip the last units.
Then I began to prepare the color and number words, and found out she knew most of those too. Below, you can see how I pretested her, having her flip over a card {from the sight word caterpillar} and read it to me. She put them in piles of words she knew and words she didn’t know.
So, we stopped our You Can Read Sight Words units, much more quickly than I had planned. I followed her lead and we moved on! I am so thankful for the way this program helped my kids and how easy it was for me to use as a home teacher. I pray many of you will enjoy it also!
