Playful Learning with Spielgaben is our monthly post sharing Spielgaben in action! If you missed the introduction to this series, you can see it here. We were given the Spielgaben set to review and are honored to have them as a blog sponsor.
Exploring Addition
We have been using our Spielgaben set to explore addition and addition with re-grouping this month.
Math Manual, Part 1, Chapter 2 ~ Play 9: Addition Matrix
I love a good Spielgaben math game and so does Ladybug! First I prepared the triangles and the cube.
This game reviewed facts equaling 7-12. Each time we rolled the cube we created an index card with all of the facts that totaled that number.
Then she found the matching numbers to create the fact, like Dominoes.
As we went on it became more challenging but she really enjoyed this simple way of reviewing facts.
Math Manual, Part 1 Chapter 2 ~ Play 10: Monsters That Re-Group
I love exploring math concepts in a hands on low-pressure way before a child is expected to master the skill on paper. This lesson on addition with re-grouping was perfect! We began with a pile of small dots and she estimated how many she thought there were. She then divided them into groups of ten into the rings and we counted.
To make things more interesting, we added a set of green dots and then grouped those to add the two numbers together! I modeled the equation for her on a card just so she could see it but the main purpose of this lesson was to just get the feel for grouping and regrouping.
We did one example with re-grouping as shown below. I started by giving her 14 greens and 8 blacks and then she divided them into groups of ten, and got the answer.
