Playful Learning with Spielgaben is our monthly post sharing Spielgaben in action! If you missed the introduction to this series, you can see it here. We were given the Spielgaben set to review and are honored to have them as a blog sponsor.
Exploring Fractions
We have been using our Spielgaben set to explore fractions this month. As we continue on with a very loose 1st grade math plan, I choose concepts I want to expose her to before beginning a more formal math program in 2nd grade.
Math Manual, Part 1, Chapter 4 ~ Play 18: Share a Cake with Friends
The first lesson we did was about sharing a cake with friends. We got out play plates and a knife, and also some fraction toys we own. We had a great time roll-playing in a fun way to simply introduce & review fraction concepts.
As the lesson went on we changed the number of blocks in the cake as well as the number of friends to share with. This was a really fun lesson, she loved it!
Math Manual, Part 1, Chapter 4 ~ Play 19: Cut the Cake
For our next lesson, a few days later, we continued to explore with the cake concept. We took it a little farther than just playing, and used the concept to write some fractions too.
I drew cakes for her and had her write {or copy} the correct fraction in each piece.
Math Manual, Part 1, Chapter 4 ~ Play 20: 2D Figure Puzzle
For our next lesson, we played a fun game from the Spielgaben manual. I created a die that had different fractions on each side. We rolled the die and used shapes to create a design to represent the fraction.
This was REALLY fun, we both enjoyed it a lot!
Totally unrelated to fractions, but here’s another fun thing I caught her doing with our set this month, an adorable cat creation! She still builds and creates freely with our set a lot!
See more math fun we have had with Spielgaben!
