Playful Learning with Spielgaben is our monthly post sharing Spielgaben in action! If you missed the introduction to this series, you can see it here. We were given the Spielgaben set to review and are honored to have them as a blog sponsor.
Exploring Measurement
We have been using our Spielgaben set to explore measurement this month. As we continue on with a very loose 1st grade math plan, I choose concepts I want to expose her to before beginning a more formal math program in 2nd grade.
Math Manual, Part 4, Chapter 1 ~ Play 48: Ruler for a Giant
The lesson was to create a ruler using the metric system but we altered it to create a ruler using the U.S. system. I sure wish we used metric, it’s so much easier! But, since we don’t yet, I wanted to be sure she understood the U.S system of measurement as well.
We counted out all of the tiny lines on a ruler and discussed what each meant as we built a ruler together.
We taped it all together when we were done!
We measured several items together and talked all about the actual ruler while also using our large version
Math Manual, Part 4 Chapter 1 ~ Play 49: Could You Give Me a Cup of Juice?
For our next lesson, we focused on capacity, which she loved! First we created cups!
Then, she chose what “liquid” to fill each with. She chose grape juice, milk and orange juice!
We then dumped the cups and lined up the “liquids” to compare.
This was a really fun lesson, she is still playing with the cups she made!
See more math fun we have had with Spielgaben!
