{We were given the Spielgaben set to review and are honored to have them as a blog sponsor.}
We have had our Spielgaben set for years now and have grown with it. This year for 2nd grade, we are using Spielgaben as an extension of our math curriculum. Spielgaben is releasing a full math program soon and we were sent a preview file of PDFs for the 2nd grade curriculum. These are the worksheets you see in this post. They are not available yet but will be soon, follow along with us and I will let you know when you can get your hands on this new math program!
We recently began our official school year and I developed a way to incorporate Spielgaben into her daily work. I choose 1-3 worksheets from the math program per week and have her work on them independently {if possible} or with a bit of instruction with me. Then on Friday I gather the worksheets and we bring the concepts alive with the Spielgaben pieces.
For her first week I chose 2 different worksheets, the first was one reviewing halves. This was a good review, she had forgotten exactly what it meant and the worksheet was a bit of a challenge. All of the photos are from the hands-on portion we did together on Friday. Below you can see her recreating some of the problems that were on the worksheet and talking me through them.
The next worksheet focused on parallel lines, which was a new concept for her. She REALLY struggled with the worksheet but when we reviewed it on Friday with the pieces – WOW, it clicked!
We added Lego guys to our playground as we playfully discussed parallel lines while we created them.
After one week I am certain that the decision to continue incorporating Spielgaben into her math is a good idea. I plan to also pull concepts out of her main math curriculum, Teaching Textbooks, to reinforce with Spielgaben. Stay tuned to see how 2nd grade unfolds! We will continue with our monthly Spielgaben updates so you can see how we continue to use our set!
See more math fun we have had with Spielgaben!
