Featuring adorable woodland animals and simple repetitive sentences, these little books give young children a fun way to practice beginning reading skills while enjoying a fall theme.
These mini books were inspired by our popular Fall Mini Books. That printable has been a favorite for years, and recently I created a new set of Halloween Cats Mini Books. I loved creating those so much that I decided we needed another set featuring some adorable fall animal friends!
Free Fall Animals Mini Book Printable
This fall animals mini book printable is completely free to download and use for single classroom or home use.
The Fall Friends printable features seven adorable woodland animals:
- squirrel
- owl
- hedgehog
- fox
- mouse
- rabbit
- bear
Each page uses the predictable sentence pattern, “I see a…” followed by the name of the animal.
The repetitive text makes these little books especially helpful for beginning readers. Children can use the picture clues along with the repeated sentence pattern as they practice reading the animal words.
Three Fall Friends Mini Books
I included three different versions of the Fall Friends book so you can choose the one that works best for your child or use all three!
Full-Color Mini Book
The first version is ready to print, assemble, and read. Each page features a colorful fall animal illustration along with the simple “I see a…” sentence.
This is a great choice if you want a quick fall reader that requires very little preparation.
Color-Your-Own Mini Book
The second version features black-and-white illustrations for kids to color. The sentences are the same, so children can practice reading while also creating their own little Fall Friends book.
This version is especially fun for kids who enjoy coloring and making their books their own.
Trace-the-Sentence Mini Book
The third version adds handwriting practice. Children can trace each simple sentence while reading about the fall animals. The printable uses handwriting lines and traceable text for sentences such as “I see a squirrel,” “I see an owl,” and “I see a hedgehog.”
This version combines beginning reading, handwriting, and a fun fall theme in one simple activity.
Find the Fall Words
There is also a bonus Find the Words activity included at the end of the printable!
Children can cut apart the mini word cards and then look through their Fall Friends book to find the matching words. The cards include words from the story such as squirrel, hedgehog, mouse, rabbit, owl, fox, bear, fall, and friends.
This is a simple way to add a little word recognition practice after your child has read the book. You could also use the cards for matching, vocabulary practice, or as a simple reading game.
How to Use the Fall Animals Mini Books
