8TH GRADE HOMESCHOOL CURRICULUM PICKS

We will not be doing all of these every day. Follow along with us and I will share throughout the year so you can see how it all fits in!

  • Math ~ Teaching Textbooks Pre Algebra (finishing, then Algebra 1)
  • Writing ~  IEW Structure & Style Level B Year 1 (finishing from last year)
  • Grammar ~ IEW Fix It! Grammar
  • Vocabulary ~ Word Up!
  • History ~ Compass Classroom American History
  • Science ~ Compass Classroom General Science
  • Logic ~ The Fallacy Detective
  • Government ~ For Which We Stand
  • Elective ~ The Animation Course

If you’ve been following me over the summer you will notice some changes, ALREADY! We added a couple of things (logic and government) and switched some things (back to IEW for writing).

WRITING

We started with Compass Classroom’s Writing Through the Wardrobe and she requested to go back to IEW. We originally switched because she requested to do something different than IEW. Funny, she missed what she had! We used Structure & Style Level B last year but didn’t finish it. We are finishing it now and will continue with another IEW writing course after that. We may do theme-based, or we may do Level B, Year 2.

MATH

She slowed down her math last year due to feeling a bit overwhelmed, so she is finishing Teaching Textbooks Pre Algebra first semester and will move on to Algebra 1 next semester. We have used Teaching Textbooks from the beginning and it works for us!

SCIENCE

We already had the Apologia General Science books from my oldest when he used them, so I added the Compass Classroom General Science course so she could watch videos also. This isn’t my favorite Compass course since it just records a teacher teaching other kids, but it gets the job done.

HISTORY

I LOVE the history we chose! She doesn’t really like history in general, but I do! We are using Compass Classroom’s American History (it’s high school level) and the video lessons are superb. I am so glad I found this curriculum!

GRAMMAR

We are continuing with Fix it! Grammar. She likes it and I do too. She went back to a lower level last year to fill in gaps so she is finishing up level 2 and we have level 3 ready to go.

VOCABULARY

She is using Compass Classroom’s Word Up! and enjoying it.

GOVERNMENT

She requested this! She had many questions and I searched to find something that didn’t feel like a textbook but could guide our learning and discussion this year before she takes high school level government in the future. I found the book For Which We Stand and I love it. We read a section together and discuss. It’s been perfect.

LOGIC

We have never used logic curriculum and I found myself wishing we had. So we are. I did some research (thanks to other homeschool moms online) and landed on The Fallacy Detective to use with her this year. We are doing it entirely together so there are discussions about it.

ANIMATION

She continues to take animation courses from The Animation Course online. We absolutely love it. They gave us one course for the review we did and we have purchased the rest. She still wants to be an animator in the future, so this is a perfect route for her, we are so thankful we found them!

READING

She reads a lot and I created a book list for her to choose from. Last year we did a formal literature curriculum and this year I went back to just reading. We discuss each book when she finishes (I have read most of them). I haven’t blogged about the reading list yet, mostly because I forgot. I will try to get this done soon! In the meantime here are the books she has read so far this year:

  • Starfish
  • Someplace to Call Home
  • Tornado Brain
  • Born Behind Bars
  • The Giver
  • Genesis Begins Again
  • The Blackbird Girls
  • Stella by Starlight

My older kids don’t like me sharing a lot about their school so you won’t hear much about how things are going until I do an end of year wrap up. If you have specific questions, feel free to email me!
